Research into tools and methodologies for content based multimedia analysis are essential foundations for the creation of any higher level processing on multimedia content, such as semantic reasoning to cite a single example. Here a comprehensive review of the literature is depicted in order to dress the entire picture of the vast amount of techniques currently available. In spite of this extensive variety of methodologies, there are a large number of issues that remain to be investigated. These are also exposed here and will most probably constitute future collaborative work within the K-Space consortium.
